This isn&#8217;t just any arm wrestling tournament, though. It is LA LAW, the catchy, if copyright-challenging, acronym for Los Angeles Ladies Arm Wrestling. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4649\" title=\"Unknown\" src=\"https:\/\/ten100tv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Unknown-494x477.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ten100tv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Unknown-494x477.png 494w, https:\/\/ten100tv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Unknown-88x85.png 88w, https:\/\/ten100tv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Unknown-188x181.png 188w, https:\/\/ten100tv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Unknown.png 722w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The organisation began in Charlottesville, Va. in 2007, and there are now seven official leagues and three apprentice leagues around the U.S.\u00a0The national the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clawusa.org\/\">Collective of Lady Arm Wrestlers<\/a>, or CLAW U.S.A.,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clawusa.org\/\">clawusa.org<\/a>\u00a0is in discussions to start new chapters in Holland and Ireland. \u00a0As yet, there are no plans include the sport in the next Olympics.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qa9n2zZw24U\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to expand for people what theater can be,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomashamptonreviews.com\/\">Howie Cohen<\/a>, a local actor (of course) who says attending LA LAW is as rewarding as going to a hockey game. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/b.vimeocdn.com\/ts\/460\/722\/46072226_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ladies&#8217; arm wrestling is difficult to categorize: an evening could be described equally as radical performance art, a burlesque variation on amateur boxing, or as a riot grrrl fundraiser with a costume competition attached. At a ladies arm wrestling &#8220;Superbrawl&#8221; event in New Orleans recently, for example, there were women in leotards, nuns&#8217; outfits, with moustaches, with blackened teeth, flexing their muscles. There were also a few women actually arm wrestling.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nSNpImZb4wU?feature=player_embedded\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A woman by the name of Jennifer Tidwell launched the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clawusa.org\/\">Collective of Lady Arm Wrestlers<\/a>\u00a0four years ago after her husband died as an offshoot of the roller derby scene in Charlottesville, Virginia. As these pioneers left Virgina, they took the spirit of the sport with them. They founded leagues in other cities, including NYC, Chicago, Austin, and L.A. CLAW just went global with leagues popping up in Australia and Brazil. In turns out that CLAW is a grassroots movement with a mission to empower women. By turns dead serious and playfully theatrical, the various leagues have raised more than $100,000 for local charities supporting women over the last four years. \u201cEach city has a different character and it depends on the ethos around it,\u201d said Amanda McRaven, who is a theater director and college professor when she isn\u2019t calling the shots at LA LAW. \u201cWe tend to be one of the more theatrical leagues.\u201d This being a city where every third person is either an aspiring actor or struggling screenwriter, all of the competitors are actresses and dancers. And that\u2019s what makes it so damn weird. Imagine\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/playbook\/2012\/05\/ay-caramba-its-lucha-libre\/\">Lucha Libre<\/a><\/em>\u00a0or the WWE with performance artists and you have an idea of the insanity. The difference, though, is this wresting is real. Yep, she\u2019s an OG.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.styleweekly.com\/binary\/1b10\/arts_culture4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just to make it clear, the arm wrestling is real. The competitors take it seriously, because everyone is wrestling for charity. The prize money is donated, and the crowd buys \u201cCLAW bucks\u201d that can be applied to stunts, shots and snacks. You can even pay for something called a \u201cboob sandwich\u201d served up by Lauren Oppelt aka \u201cLott\u00eb Bootay.\u201d We\u2019ll just leave it at that and let your imagination run wild. LA LAW is just starting out. The plan is to get together every four months.
